Why Plant a Tree?
Leave a Legacy- unlike cut flowers that are fresh for only a few days, trees last a lifetime. American Liberty Elms are one of the best choices since they are one of the longest living trees. Elms can live 200 to 300 years benefiting several generations.
- Beauty- yes cut flowers are beautiful and so are trees. American elms are called the “Flower” of the tree world and God’s masterpiece. They grow tall becoming grand sentinels watching over the land. Their vase or fountain like appearance, resulting from their graceful arching branches, add elegance to any landscape.
- Life giving- Trees cleanse our air of pollutants by absorbing carbon dioxide and purifying it. They help provide clean water. Elms are especially efficient in cleansing polluted air and soils contaminated with pesticides and other chemicals. The elm leaf's capacity for this function is increased by projecting hairs, which in effect add to the total surface of the leaf. They also have very extensive roots systems reaching the width of their large canopies. It time a canopy can reach 60 to 65 ft. in width. The extensive root system helps prevent soil erosion and improve soil conditions.
- Save you money- Deciduous trees (those which drop their leaves in the winter) will save you money in the long run. American Liberty Elms will have a 60 to 65 ft. spread at maturity, producing a wide area of shade and reducing air conditioning costs. (Elms are rapid growers.) In winter, the tree is leafless, allowing warm sunlight to reach buildings. The canopy is high enough that it doesn't hide a building's architecture. Imagine the shade it will provide when planted on a main street in front of a business...then think of the $$ saved in air conditioning costs. When experts say planting three trees around your home will cut your air conditioning bill in half, they are speaking of medium size trees. Elms are the exception- they will grow to be large, so one elm will fill a landscape space that otherwise would require several smaller to medium and perhaps short-lived tree. Trees also reduce run off which means your city has to install fewer sewer/storm catch basins.
- Reduce temperature in “heat zones” - Trees planted in groves or lining drives or streets create oases. They can reduce the temperatures in “hot zones” or “heat islands” created where trees have been cut and replaced with heat retaining materials such as asphalt, concrete and brick. By eliminating a few parking spaces and creating “tree planters” in their place we can reduce temperatures in these high heat areas. Elm Research has a plan for cities who wish to create “tree planters.”
- Improve our emotions- Multiple studies have been conducted on the positive effects of green trees on our emotions and our health. Hospitals are turning to landscape architects for help in improving the landscape outside hospital rooms. The more green the happier you will be!
- Homes for our feathered friends- Trees create nesting and feeding places for our featherd and furry friends. American elms were once home to the Baltimore Oriole. By planting American elms we will encourage more Baltimore Orioles and other birds.
